Even though Duyen Ha was shockingly eliminated in the latest episode of Top Chef: Carolinas, one small moment after the fishing derby may have made fans love her even more than before.
And ironically, it had nothing to do with cooking.
During the Elimination Challenge, contestants competed in a fishing derby where different advantages were awarded depending on performance. Duyen ended up dominating the bonus category rewards, winning extra shopping money after catching both the smallest fish and the highest total number of fish.
As a result, she entered the cooking portion of the challenge with significantly more money than several of the other chefs.
But instead of using every advantage purely for herself, Duyen did something viewers rarely see in competitive reality television.

She used some of her extra budget to purchase ingredients for other contestants.
The gesture was brief, but fans online immediately became obsessed with it.
At a point in the season where tensions are high, alliances barely exist, and every contestant is desperately fighting for a spot in the finale, Duyen choosing kindness over strategy stood out massively to viewers.
Social media reactions exploded almost instantly after the episode aired.
Many fans described her as:
“Too nice for reality TV.”
“The anti-villain of the season.”
“A genuinely good person trapped inside a competition show.”
Others pointed out how unusual her behavior felt compared to the typical late-season atmosphere of cooking competitions, where contestants often become more guarded, aggressive, and hyper-focused on individual survival.
Instead, Duyen continued to show the same generosity and warmth that had quietly defined her entire run on the show.
That kindness made her elimination even more heartbreaking for many viewers.
After consistently delivering strong dishes throughout the season, Duyen was ultimately sent home because of severely undercooked fish in her Vietnamese canh chua dish. While the judges appreciated several aspects of the flavors, the technical error proved fatal this close to the finale.
But despite the loss, audience support for her seems stronger than ever.
In fact, many fans now believe Duyen could become one of the biggest “fan favorite” contenders of the entire season.

Part of that comes from her overall storyline. Unlike many reality competition contestants who are edited into heroes or villains, Duyen often came across as deeply human — talented and competitive, but also humble, emotional, and supportive toward the people around her.
And moments like helping other chefs buy ingredients only reinforced that image.
Several viewers even argued that her kindness may have unintentionally hurt her competitive edge because she approached the game with far less selfishness than many reality TV contestants typically do.
Still, that same attitude may ultimately become the reason audiences remember her long after the season ends.
Because while Top Chef is ultimately about winning, fans often become most attached to contestants who feel authentic rather than strategically manufactured.
And after this episode, many viewers feel Duyen Ha embodied exactly that.
She may not have made it to the finale — but in the eyes of a large portion of the fandom, she absolutely left the competition as one of the season’s most beloved contestants.
