TV gardener Monty Don has shared the devastating news of the death of his beloved dog Peggy, who passed away just days shy of her 16th birthday. The Gardeners’ World star took to Instagram on January 25 to reveal the sorrowful loss, leaving fans heartbroken.
Monty, who is known for his deep bond with his pets, posted a touching tribute to Peggy, describing her as an “eccentric, quirky, infinitely gentle and loving” dog who will be deeply missed. “She went as she had lived, gently and without fuss,” Monty wrote.
In a truly heartfelt gesture, Monty revealed that Peggy had already been laid to rest in the garden, beside his other beloved dogs, Nigel and Nell. “She is now buried in the coppice alongside Nigel and Nell and the other dogs,” he shared, reflecting the deep connection he has with his furry companions.
The outpouring of support from fans has been overwhelming, with many sharing their own grief over the loss of their pets. TV personality Lisa Snowdon expressed her sympathy, saying, “Sending love to you all,” while fellow animal lover Nicki Chapman added, “So sorry.”
One fan commented, “Ohhhhhh Peggy, have a heavenly life filled with chasing rabbits and squirrels, no back pain, never having to walk in the rain, always being warm, and always having a lap to snuggle up on.” Another wrote, “The loss of our dogs is unbearable grief. So sorry for your loss of sweet little Peggy.”
Monty’s love for animals is well-known, and his fans have also paid tribute to his home, Longmeadow, calling it a place of “serendipity” for any dog lucky enough to live there.
