A 23-year-old man, Vikram Digua, has been found guilty at Southampton Crown Court for the cold-blooded murder of university student Henry Nowak. While the conviction brings the trial to a close, a massive national controversy is rapidly escalating over the actions of the responding police officers, who handcuffed the dying victim based on a false allegation of racism made by the killer.
The Murder and the Weapon
The court heard that Digua stabbed 23-year-old Nowak five times—inflicting catastrophic wounds to his chest, groin, face, and legs.
The murder weapon was identified as a 21-centimeter Kirpan, a ceremonial knife carried by initiated Sikhs as an article of faith. Prosecutors highlighted that while UK law permits the discrete carrying of a small Kirpan under clothing, Digua chose to carry a significantly larger blade on display, alongside a second concealed knife. The prosecution painted Digua as a man with a deep fascination for weaponry, noting he had trained with weapons since age 12 and once suggested a knife was a suitable wedding present.
Judge William Mosley has adjourned the case until June 1st for sentencing, where Digua faces a mandatory life sentence.
The “Wicked Lie” and Police Failure
The most explosive element of the case centers on the immediate aftermath of the stabbing. Rather than calling an ambulance, Digua called the police and claimed he had been the victim of a racist attack by Nowak. The prosecution definitively dismantled this claim during the trial, categorizing it as a “wicked lie” designed to manipulate law enforcement.
Tragically, the manipulation succeeded. When Hampshire Police arrived at the scene, they responded to Digua’s claims by treating the bleeding Nowak as the perpetrator. Officers handcuffed the dying student as he lay on the pavement, ignoring his cries that he could not breathe. It took officers three minutes to begin administering first aid.
While a pathologist testified that Nowak’s catastrophic internal injuries meant police intervention could not have saved his life, the indignity of his final moments has sparked widespread public fury.
Political and Public Backlash
Hampshire Police have issued a formal apology. A senior officer stated publicly: “I’m sorry that he was handcuffed and arrested in the moments before he lost consciousness… [Digua] lied when police attended the scene, he continued to lie as Henry’s condition deteriorated.”
However, the apology has done little to quell the outrage. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is expected to launch an investigation.
The incident has triggered intense national discourse regarding police training and priorities. Commentators on networks like GB News argued that officers on the scene were paralyzed by a “modern, leftish understanding of race,” suggesting they prioritized a verbal allegation of racism over visually obvious, fatal stab wounds on a white victim.
The controversy has even drawn international attention, with tech billionaire Elon Musk publicly condemning the officers as “disgusting excuses for law enforcement” and offering to fund a private prosecution against the police force on behalf of the Nowak family.
