The mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie has been reported missing in Arizona under what authorities are calling “disturbing” circumstances, as homicide detectives are now assisting with the investigation.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen late Saturday night near her home in Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy was spotted at her residence between 9:30pm and 9:45pm on Saturday. However, by around noon on Sunday, a concerned family member contacted 911 to report her missing.
‘Concerning evidence’ discovered
When deputies began investigating Nancy’s disappearance, Sheriff Nanos revealed that officers uncovered “concerning evidence” at the scene — prompting homicide detectives to join the case.
While he declined to specify what that evidence was, citing the ongoing investigation, the sheriff made clear that authorities are deeply worried.
“WE HOPE WE FIND HER SAFE AND SOUND,” NANOS SAID,
“BUT WE ARE VERY CONCERNED.”
At a news briefing, he stressed that the case is officially being handled as a search and rescue operation, but investigators are not ruling out foul play.
Massive search underway
An extensive search is now underway across the Tucson area, with law enforcement deploying K-9 units, drones, and even the sheriff’s department plane to scour the Catalina Foothills neighborhood where Nancy disappeared.
Deputies have also checked nearby hospitals and contacted medical transport services, but so far no medical facilities have reported seeing her.
“WE’RE PRETTY MUCH THROWING EVERYTHING AT THIS,” SHERIFF NANOS SAID.
Considered a ‘vulnerable adult’
Nancy is considered a “vulnerable adult”, primarily due to her age and physical mobility issues, authorities confirmed. However, deputies emphasized that she does not suffer from cognitive impairment, adding to the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
She is described as five feet five inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. It remains unclear what she may have been wearing when she vanished.
Savannah Guthrie yet to speak publicly
Savannah Guthrie has not yet commented publicly on her mother’s disappearance.
The Today Show host was raised in Tucson and is a graduate of the University of Arizona. She returned to the city late last year to film segments introducing viewers to her hometown.
Despite living in New York, Nancy frequently visited Savannah at the Today Show studios — appearances Savannah often spoke about with warmth and pride.
A bond often shared on air
Savannah has previously opened up on air about the powerful role her mother played in her life, particularly during difficult years.
“WHEN I WAS IN MY 30S, I REALLY WISHED TO BE MARRIED AND TO BE A MOM, AND THINGS JUST DID NOT HAPPEN THAT FAST FOR ME,” SAVANNAH ONCE SHARED.
“MY MOM’S CONFIDENCE THAT I WOULD BE A MOM — EVEN AS THE YEARS TICKED BY — MEANT SO MUCH TO ME. SHE SAID, ‘OF COURSE YOU’LL BE A MOM, AND YOU’RE GOING TO BE A WONDERFUL MOM.’”
She added that her mother’s faith and reassurance helped her through some of her hardest moments.
As the search continues, concern is mounting — not only among law enforcement, but among viewers nationwide who are anxiously awaiting updates in a case that grows more troubling by the hour.
