The road to the finale of Next Level Chef Season 5 turned emotional, chaotic, and deeply controversial Thursday night as semifinalist Gabrielle was eliminated just one step short of the grand finale in an episode many fans are already calling one of the season’s most heartbreaking hours.
The semifinal, fittingly titled “Building a Legacy,” challenged the remaining four chefs — Gabrielle, Connor, Cole, and Darian — to create the single dish they most wanted to be remembered for. According to mentor Nyesha Arrington, the challenge was about identity as much as technical skill.
“Create a dish that defines you as a chef,” she told the contestants. “A dish that you would want to be remembered by.”
But the pressure escalated immediately when the chefs learned there would be a major twist. For the first time in the show’s history, nobody knew what protein they would receive until the ingredient platform began moving through the three-level kitchen.
With only 30 minutes to cook, adaptability suddenly became just as important as execution.
The chaos started instantly for Gabrielle.
After grabbing lobster from the moving platform, disaster struck when part of the shellfish — including an entire claw — crashed into the basement kitchen below. In a semifinal where every ingredient mattered, the moment looked like it might completely derail her shot at the finale.

Darian dominated the night with his peppercorn-crusted filet, a dish Nyesha called “incredible” and Gordon claimed he would still be thinking about “for months.” Meanwhile, Cole impressed the judges with a technically strong pan-seared turbot dish that secured the second finale spot.
That left Gabrielle facing Connor in the elimination cook-off for the final place in the finale.
With no twists and no safety net remaining, the chefs had just 25 minutes to create the better plate.

veal schnitzel with tahini-minted pea purée and caramelized figs.
The judges were visibly impressed.
Richard Blais described the plate as “a study in beautiful colors and lightness” and called the schnitzel itself “absolutely textbook.” Nyesha praised the sweetness from the peas and admired Gabrielle’s balance of elegance and technique, though she believed the tahini slightly overpowered parts of the dish.
Connor countered with pan-roasted veal chops, asparagus, and mushrooms, earning strong praise for his execution and veal cookery.
In the end, Connor claimed the final spot in the finale, eliminating Gabrielle just short of the finish line.
The decision immediately sparked emotional reactions online.
Many viewers argued Gabrielle had consistently demonstrated stronger refinement and creativity throughout the competition and believed her semifinal dishes were among the most polished of the night. Others defended the result, saying Connor delivered the more complete elimination plate under pressure.
Still, much of the post-episode conversation centered on Gordon Ramsay’s emotional farewell to Gabrielle.
