Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has shared details of his wife Hanni’s home birth as the couple recently welcomed their first child together, baby girl Constance. The David Platt star and Hanni, who worked as a storyliner on Corrie, opted for a pool birth and not knowing the sex of their kid beforehand.

Speaking on his podcast On The Sofa with co-host and former Corrie co-star Colson Smith, Shepherd explained he and Hanni managed to have a home birth despite the baby being two weeks late. The soap star was in charge of revealing the sex of the baby, adding that all the midwives were convinced it’d be a boy.

“That was the game that it would be up to me to say, ‘And it’s a thing…’” he explained.

“Well, I got baby out. It was in a pool. We had a water birth. That’s the other news as well, we were lucky enough to be able to have a home birth. We didn’t have to do the hospital even though she was two weeks late. We didn’t want to go down the induced path…”

Shepherd said that his wife a “slow labour” on the Sunday in the lead-up to Friday, 26 June, when baby Constance came into this world.

“So, we didn’t know. Everybody in the room, all the midwives, were just adamant it was a boy,” he also said about the baby’s sex.

“So, we didn’t know. But everyone’s going, ‘Boy, it’s a boy. It’s definitely a boy!’ And it wasn’t, it were a girl. But when when they came out, we couldn’t quite see… It was, I’d say, about two minutes, but everybody was going, ‘Oh, he’s all right. He’s okay. You know, he’s coming around’, and blah blah blah.

“Then Hanni was like, ‘Is it a boy?’ And then they were like, ‘Oh, we don’t know. We just kind of assumed it was’, and she went, ‘Oh, let’s have a look!’ And Hanni was like, ‘Oh, yeah. Oh, is it a boy?’ And I went, ‘No, it’s a girl!’”

“Hanni’s all good. Yeah, she did really well,” he then added about his wife.

“No pain relief. No gas and air. She didn’t have anything… She’d done hypno birth, she’d done all that. She’d done exercises and whatnot. She was fully on it!”
