In a deeply emotional interview, Gyles Brandreth, beloved This Morning star, has shared the shocking and heart-wrenching story of his baby grandson, Kitt, and his courageous battle with cancer. This raw and moving revelation comes ahead of World Cancer Day, offering a rare glimpse into the resilience and strength of a family faced with the unimaginable.
A Family’s Worst Nightmare
In 2017, Gyles’ daughter Saethryd and her husband Mark noticed a small, pea-shaped lump near baby Kitt’s stomach. Initially brushed off as a harmless cyst, further tests revealed the shocking truth: Kitt had rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects fewer than 60 children in the UK each year.
At just 15 months old, Kitt’s diagnosis turned their world upside down. Gyles reflected on the overwhelming shock, saying, “We think of cancer as something that happens to unlucky middle-aged people. We never imagined it could strike a child—especially our Kitt.”
A Harrowing Journey of Treatment
Kitt’s battle began at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he underwent intense chemotherapy. The tiny warrior faced unimaginable hardships, including hair loss and life-threatening complications such as a bacterial infection that impacted his heart and liver. Gyles revealed, “It was a shock to the system. You never think this could happen to a child you love so much.”
Despite the overwhelming odds, the family never gave up hope, relying on the world-class care at GOSH. Gyles praised the medical team, saying, “They never made us feel alone. It was a deeply moving experience, and we couldn’t have asked for better care.”
Grandfather’s Role in the Healing Process
While Kitt’s parents focused on his medical care, Gyles took on a different but equally important role — providing a sense of normalcy. “At GOSH, they never forget that children are still children,” he shared. “Kitt and I spent hours in the playroom, doing jigsaw puzzles and laughing together. It was a small way to bring some light into such a dark time.”
But Kitt’s journey wasn’t without setbacks. He also faced veno-occlusive disease, a potentially fatal complication from the chemotherapy. Yet, with their unshakeable strength and the exceptional care from the medical staff, Kitt was eventually declared cancer-free in November 2017.
A Miracle in the Making
Today, Kitt is a vibrant 10-year-old, in remission for eight years. He still visits GOSH for annual check-ups, but his journey is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and cutting-edge medical care. Gyles, always the proud grandfather, said, “Every year that goes by, I’m reminded of how lucky we are. Kitt is doing wonderfully, and we’ll forever be grateful to GOSH for their unwavering support during the toughest time of our lives.”
Kitt’s remarkable survival story stands as an inspiring reminder of the miracles that can happen when love, faith, and exceptional medical care come together.
