Kyle Busch has died following complications from pneumonia that developed into sepsis, according to a statement released Saturday morning by his family.

“The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the family said. “The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time.”

Busch, 41, passed away on Thursday after what was initially described as a brief and serious illness. His condition worsened rapidly on Wednesday, when he experienced a medical emergency at the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord, North Carolina.

According to a 911 recording obtained by TMZ, an unidentified caller reported that Busch was suffering from “shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out and is producing a little bit of blood — coughing up some blood.”

He was transported to a hospital in Charlotte, according to the Associated Press. By Thursday morning, his family and Richard Childress Racing confirmed he would miss the weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 due to what was described as a “severe illness.” Later that day at approximately 5:40 p.m. ET, NASCAR publicly announced his death, sending shockwaves through the racing world.

“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch,” the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and NASCAR said in a joint statement. “A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans. Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series. In the days leading up to his death, Busch had reportedly been dealing with sinus-related health issues while competing at Watkins Glen. Twelve days before his passing, he asked for medical attention after a race, requesting a doctor visit him in his hauler. Despite the discomfort, he continued racing and even went on to win a Truck Series event in Dover, Delaware, just a week prior.

Busch leaves behind a historic legacy as the winningest driver across all three of NASCAR’s national series. He captured two NASCAR Cup Series championships and amassed 234 career victories, establishing himself as one of the most successful drivers in motorsport history.

Beyond driving, Busch also worked as a team owner and played a key role in mentoring younger drivers, including preparing his son Brexton to eventually follow in his footsteps. He was in the middle of his 22nd Cup Series season, driving for Richard Childress Racing at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife Samantha, his children Brexton and Lennix, his brother Kurt, and extended family members.

NASCAR has confirmed that the Coca-Cola 600 will proceed as scheduled this weekend. Austin Hill will take over driving duties in Busch’s car.
