GMB shares breaking news on missing 11-year-old boy
Good Morning Britain halted for a breaking news update as the search for an 11-year-old boy who went missing after entering the River Don in South Yorkshire has continued. Kate Garraway issued a number of news updates as she explained on the show that an update had been issued this morning as the search continued over the weekend. Kate told viewers: “Breaking news in the last hour, police are continuing their search for an 11-year-old boy missing in the River Don in Mexborough in South Yorkshire.
“It comes as a 13-year-old girl has died in hospital after being pulled from a river in the Yorkshire Dales last night.” She then handed the update over to journalist Amelia Beckett and reiterated that the event was “tragic” as Kate asked what more they now know.

Amelia said: “It’s very tragic indeed. We know that police were called here at around 8 o’clock on Saturday evening to reports that an 11-year-old boy had entered the water just upstream from here. Specialist teams were called, an underwater unit spent all day yesterday searching the river. We understand that in the last hour those searches have now resumed.”
She continued by explaining that a fresh update has been that family and friends are trying to get involved with searches, but police have warned them to leave them to it because the area is dangerous.
Amelia then explained that the news of the missing boy followes the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl who entered the River Wharf which, she said, meant there had been at least 15 water-related deaths during the recent heatwave.

A statement from the police said: “We understand people are desperate to help but, for everyone’s safety, we must ask that only those involved in our operation join the search. We are doing everything we can to find this young man but, if a member of the public was to get in to trouble whilst searching, we would need to pause our search to help.”
It was confirmed that the boy had gone missing at Ferry Boat Lane in Mexborough, a narrow residential road that leads down to the River Don. The river flows through Sheffield and Rotherham before joining the River Ouse.
The City of Doncastor Council councillor Gema Cobby has shared her condolences with the family and stated that she will be pushing for more community awareness on water safety.
